 What does it look like to work together?  

Begins with…

 

  1. We are reached out to provide behavior supports and then need to recruit for  individual support/community based  staff to help meet support needs of client. 
  2. We are reached out to provide individual support/community based staff and the client has an acuity for behavior so we imbed behavior supports.  

Our support staff have a foundation of training

 

  • Introduction to positive behavior supports through Rutgers Boggs Center 
  • Crisis management training
  • Are encouraged to continue any training opportunities they would like through Boggs
  • RBT (registered behavior technician) coursework 

What makes a successful collaboration between behavior supports and related support staff?

 

  • When support team and caregivers understand from the beginning that working together may be part of the assignment (our supervisors support this understanding) 
  • When support team and caregivers  have a  willingness to see things a little differently than before (especially if the same behaviors have been occurring for a long time)
  • Through regularly meeting together, reviewing progress together and making changes based on that progress,  behavior support staff, support team and caregivers continue to strategize together, letting the support team know that they are a vital part of contributing information that can lead to really great improvements for a client’s quality of life
